MAIN AREA DESCRIPTIONS
For practical reasons we have divided the city in three main areas where most
expatriates live and a more detailed description for each district within Shanghai
City. |
| DOWNTOWN |
| What we call downtown refers to the area within the inner Ring-Road,
west of Huangpu River and south of Suzhou Creek. (Wusong River) This includes
Huangpu district, Jingan district and parts of Luwan, Putou and Xuhui districts.
Not many international schools but a number of international kindergartens are
located downtown. |
| HONGQIAO |
| Residential area and also host to west of the inner Ring-Road
on the way towards the Hongqioa domestic airport. This area includes the main
part of Changning district and some part of Minhang district. Many expatriate
villa compounds and the Gubei residential area is located in this area. Many international
schools and kindergartens are located in Hongqiao. |
| PUDONG |
| Newly developed area east of Huangpu River. Some newly developed
expatriate villa compounds and residential apartment compounds are located in
this area. Many international schools and kindergartens are located in Pudong. |
| OTHER |
| Other areas of Shanghai than Downtown, Hongqiao and Pudong has
a low density of expatriates and is simply referred to as "other" in
the Residential

DESCRIPTIONS
DISTRICT BY DISTRICT |
| Huangpu |
| This is definitely the top tourist destination in the city with
the Bund (originally a Hindi word meaning embankment, referring to a section of
the banks of the Huangpu River as it runs through central Shanghai) and the the
pedestrian part of Nanjing road (China's number one shopping street) in Huangpu.
Then, if you are strolling along the Bund along Huangpu River, you may notice
that most tourists are looking across the river to the skyline of Pudong. To visit
the Bund in the in the evening to see the light up art deco buildings in the Bund
on one side and light up Pearl TV Tower and skyscrapers on the Pudong side is
a must for any visitor to Shanghai. Huangpu District is also where you will find
city hall, Shanghai Grand Theatre and People's Square. The north part of Huangpu
known as Nanshi (south city) was before an own district but is after incorporation
s part of Huangpu. Yu garden and temple of the city good is located in this area |
| Luwan |
Directly south of People's Square is Luwan District. The north
part of Luwan includes one of the best sections of Hua Hai Road, famous for it's
shops and restaurants. Parts of Luwan and with parts of Xuhui is also the more
beautiful parts of the old French Concession area, one of the most prestigious
sections of the city. The trees lining the main streets were imported from France
over 100 years ago. The upscale restaurant and entertainment area Xintiandi is
located a little bit south of Huaihai Road at Taicang Road near Madang Road.
The Lupu bridge and Dapu tunnel connects Luwan with Pudong. |
| Jingan |
| Jingan District is home to Jingan Temple built in 247 during the
Three Kingdoms Period and moved to it’s present location in 1216. Many upscale
shopping malls is located on Nanjing West Road where the best shopping in the
city is found. The highest concentration of 4 and 5 star hotels in the city are
to be found in Jingan district along with many high grade offices and apartment
buildings such as Kerry Center, Shanghai Centre and PLaza 66. |
| Xuhui |
| Some part of Xuhui is located within the area we refer to as Downtown
(within the inner Ring-Road) Xuhui District is one of the most prestigious living
areas and shares together with Luwan some of the most beautiful parts of the old
French Concession area. The prestigious Jiaotong University is located in the
district, known as one of the four elite universities of China. Xuhui has the
lowest population density of downtown districts, but the highest concentration
of cultural and scientific institutions. Xuhui has traditionally been an upper
class living area with many government officials living in the district. Many
luxury villas and apartments is being development in the district. Xuhui has the
highest number of old European villas and houses left from colonial days. Xujiahui
an intersection where five main streets including meets is the center of the district
and one of the main shopping areas of the city with many big department stores.

| Changning |
| A small part of Changning district is located in the area we refer
to as Downtown (within the inner Ring-Road). The main part is within the area
we refer to as Honggiao. |
| Hongqiao |
| Although the name originally refers to town located in Minhang
now the main part of the area known under this name is located in Changning. Hongqioa
best know for it's domestic airport, the zoo (to be removed to Pudong and the
WTO center will be built at the present area of the Zoo) and expatriate communities.
There are plenty of luxurious villas and high-grade apartment/office complexes
and the shopping and services cater heavily to foreigners. Gubei Area is a residential
area within Hongqiao that many apartment complexes mainly catering to expatriates.
Of particular interest are the residential areas that are designed after European
style themes such as Rotterdam Gardens, Villas de Versailles and Rome Garden.
Shanghai’s best-stocked Carrefour supermarket is located in Gubei. |
| Minhang |
| A small part of Minhang south of Changning is within the area
we refer to as Hongqioa. The part west of of Xuhui that is connected by number
1 metro line and the elevated railway is expanding rapidly with many new villa
compounds and apartment complexes being developed. The rentals and property prices
in the southern part of Minhang is remarkably lower than in Hongqiao. |
| Pudong (East of Huangpu
River) |
| Pudong is roughly the size of Singapore and too large to compare
to other districts in the downtown area. With such empty areas, Pudong is where
to find some of the largest homes and golf courses, and International Airport
is also located here. Here we mainly refer to two areas. The completion of new
metro lines and bridges has helped to rapidly speed up the development of this
area. |
| Lujiazui |
| Luijiazui is the financial center of China with the head offices
of most of the banks and financial institutions. Many office towers and buildings
in this area that was farmland as late as in the early nineties. |
| Jinqiao |
| With an industrial Zone named Jinqiao Export Development Zone
located here. Jinqiao attracted many big multinational companies such as NEC,
GM, Siemens, Philips to mention some. Some of residential buildings and villas
here are of high grade. It is also very convenient to go to Pudong International
Airport. |

OF SUZHOU CREEK (WUSONG RIVER) -------------------- |
| Yangpu |
| This area has many colleges and universities such as the famous
Fudan University, Tongji University and Shanghai International Studies University.
The long hang-bridge Yangpu bridge spanning over the Huangpu river makes transport
to and from Pudong convenient. There is not many upscale shops and restaurants
in the area but the convenient access to Pudong and the many universities combined
with the relatively low costs of living makes it a suitable area for persons studying
or teaching in the universities or working in Pudong. |
| Hongkou |
The part of Hongkou northeast of the Bund is now being developed
as a residential and entertainment area under the name New Bund because of it’s
view over the Huangpu River. The districts main shopping street is Sichuan north
road and leads from Hongkou Park in the north to Suzhou Creek in the North.
The famous Chinese writer and philosopher Lu Xun lived and wrote near Hongkou
Park (also known as Lu Xun Park as it hosts the memorial tomb of Lu Xun). Next
to Hongkou Park is the large soccer stadium Hongkou Stadium. |
| Zhabei |
| The Shanghai Railway Station is located in this area. The most
famous building in Zhabei District include Kerry Everbright City and Henderson
Everbright City. There is also some upscale apartment buildings next to Suzhou
Creek. |
| Putuo |
| One part of Putou district is within the area we refer to as downtown
(south of Suzhou Creek). The Jade Buddha Temple is located in
this area. The temple was completed in 1882 and named The Jade
Buddha Temple later. The temple was partly destroyed by fire
in 1918 and a new temple was built on its present site. |
